Same base different taste...

Same base illustration just took it a little to the left with the wonder woman theme. I might finish this one up or shelve it and move on to the next idea.

Call for Entries: Artist Program

Ah, Motherland!
a Wonder Women project at _gaia

“In a land of immigrants, one was not an alien but simply the latest arrival.”
-Rudolf Arnheim

With the passing of time, advances in technology, transportation and an ever homogenizing economic global market, the world is a seemingly smaller place. Emigration and immigration have become less arduous, less final and less difficult – technically. However, the issues of identity, home, family, culture and politics are ever present and ever more complex. As conflicts change landscapes and relationships and economies grow with enticing opportunity and fail with devastating consequence, people are forced to make decisions of place and home that have lasting effects on their identity and the identities of their descendants.

Wonder Women invites 10 artists to reflect on notions of home and identity addressing emigration and immigration. We invite artists who have chosen to make the US their new home or who are descendents of immigrants to participate in a residency program that will focus on exploring immigration through the lens of feminism and social change. Weekly discussions will address issues related to art, identity, migration, economy, war, displacement, opportunity, government and policy. Each participant is encouraged to contribute to the discussion and to the source materials.

Every Sunday, beginning January 17th [through February 21st] accepted applicants will meet as a group at _gaia studio to discuss current social issues and topics brought forth by participants. There will be a potluck lunch each Sunday with group discussion and critique of works in progress. All accepted applicants must commit to all Sunday meetings (see schedule below). At the end of the program there will be a group exhibition (to be announced.)

History:
Wonder Women is a residency program in its fifth year presented by _gaia at their studio in Jersey City, NJ. The Wonder Women mission is to engage practicing, yet underrepresented artists who are eager to participate in a collective dialogue about migration and identity.

_gaia, an environment for creative process is dedicated to fostering women’s activism, art practice and study. This year the Wonder Women project is being organized and curated by Doris Caçoilo and Renata Moreira.

I'm sad.

I'm sad that I haven't been able to post here since whenever it was.

I'm almost literally depressed that I haven't really been able to draw, because that's what I do.

I guess.

Here's what I have been doing (other than that Color class no one knows about):

Lettering & Type Design (with Campbell)

Ugh.

Elios: The Hairiest Man in Greece (with Elias and Mad)

I'm inking page three!

Caution (Comic Book project for BFA Exhibit)

Here's an excerpt from the script:

PAGE ONE

Four horizontal, silhouetted panels featuring one figure defending himself/fighting one hulking figure. Some of the background can be seen as simple diagrammatic lines. Maybe.

PANEL ONE

One figure dodges a heavy punch by crouching. The attacking figure is massive, hulkish, and wearing a suit.

MANNY (caption): A lot of people wonder about heroes. The fictional ones.

(caption2): Like Hercules, Sherlock Holmes, or even Spider-Man.

PANEL TWO

We see the hulkish-suit swing in a backhand motion as he recovers from the heavy punch he just missed. The smaller figure quickly lunges his torso backwards in an effort to dodge the backhand. His hand is almost reaching out to push against something.

MANNY (caption): They wish they had a life that was more exciting. "My life would be more exciting if I was slaying a dragon," they ponder.

(caption2): I say, "You don't know that."

PANEL THREE

Side view, whole body. The smaller figure tucks and rolls betwen the hulk's legs as the hulkish smashes through a crate with two fists.

MANNY (caption): People say FML like it will save the ecosystem or cure cancer. Like a prayer.

(caption2): People hate the lives they lead. They want to escape their lives. They want to be someone else.

PANEL FOUR

We are close to the front of the hulkish figure. The smaller one springs in the air, about to land a kick in his back.

MANNY (caption): I just want to be normal.

Hopefully things return to a normal state after December.

Remember.

Job searching

So, I've been trolling art job forums and found this cool project. They supplied an image of existing background art and said "if you want to impress us, create a character that would fit the image."

Here is that picture:

Here is the gnome I created:

EDIT: Used correct working color profile in Photoshop, I was using a profile used by comic book printing parameters not for web purposes.....BIG difference

Primal Rage

ouch...

BTW looking around for a good webhost. Any suggestions?

Primal Rage

here's my submission for the Primal Rage contest. This was actually just one concept of many i had floating in my head. I went with this one cause I knew it'd present some interesting challenges such as gorilla anatomy and the male figure as well. Hope you like it and as always may the best submission win!;D

Primal Rage

Since I won't have anymore time to work on this, I'll go ahead and post my entry for the contest now.

So, here it is.

What does "rage" mean to me? Well, whenever I thought of the term, I couldn't help but think about the "28" movies (28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later). Naturally, I had to go with what kept showing up in my head. It's funny enough that the first thing that came to mind was the SNES fighting game titled "Primal Rage" but it wasn't a long lasting thought. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did making it.

I don't think I'll be able to get back on till about 10pm today, but I can't wait to see everyone's work!
